Harvey's Dock

Description

This disused dock still exists. It was a private dock built for the Harveys (or Harvies) of the Yoker Distillery (in operation from 1770-1927 and probably older), Dundashill Distillery and Bruichladdich Distillery. Coal, barley, maize and molasses came in through the dock.

The location is sometimes described as the coal wharf for the Knightswood Waggonway (Dumbarton Glassworks) (closed 1775) but this is unlikely as the dock didn't exist before 1857 and prior to this the entire area had been modified by river training walls and rubble infill. Yoker Lodge had private gardens right to the river bank. The waggonway quay was probably in this area, possibly a little further east at the Yoker-Renfrew ferry (relocated to present site in 1790).

A timber basin, with which Harvey's Dock is often confused, existed at a shipyard further downstream by East Barns of Clyde. This dock was obliterated with the construction of Rothesay Dock.
